QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: WHAT IS FASTING?
A: Biblical fasting is NOT dieting! It is giving up specific foods for a spiritual purpose. Fasting, when coupled with prayer, Bible study and giving is a powerful tool for the Christian. Fasting is a way to conquer the flesh and grow spiritually.
Q: WHY SHOULD I FAST?
A: In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks of fasting and says, “When you fast...” not “If you fast...” Therefore, He is identifying fasting as a normal part of Christian life.
Q: WHERE CAN I FIND FASTING IN THE BIBLE?
A: Matthew 6:16-18; Matthew 9:14-15; Luke 18:9-14; Nehemiah 1:4; Daniel 9:3; 20, Joel 2:12; Luke 2:37; Acts 10:30-31; Acts 13:2; 1 Samuel 7:5-6; Ezra 8:21-23; Nehemiah 9:1-3; Joel 2:15-16; Jonah 3:5-10; Acts 27:33-37.
Q: WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM FASTING?
A: When you fast, your body detoxifies, eliminating toxins from your system. This can result in mild discomfort such as headaches and irritability. This is caused by the withdrawal from caffeine and sugar. Also, you will naturally have hunger pains. Limit your activity and exercise and take time to rest.
Fasting brings about miraculous results. You are following Jesus’ example when you fast. Spend time listening to uplifting praise & worship music and study the Word. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God, and listening to His voice.
Q: WHAT IF I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION?
A: If you have any health concerns, please consult your doctor before beginning a fast. Discuss together what type of fast would be best for you. If you cannot fast from food because of health reasons, try refraining from something else that you enjoy and spend extra time in prayer and Bible study. God sees your sacrifice and will reward your desire for Him.
